After 4 generations of wine-growers and know-how, the Champagne House Rémy MASSIN et Fils sprung to life with harvested grapes from vineyards spread over 20 hectares and located on the sunny hillsides of our little Cote des Bar village: VILLE SUR ARCE
Dominating laws of Nature have always been ruling the terroir of the Champagne region. The nature of the sub-soil lays on geological stratum dating from Jurassic era (secondary era prior to cretaceous era). This peculiarity has been guide for the selection of grape-varieties.
Three grape-varieties have adapted remarkably well /Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. The Côte des Bars spreads over around 7000 ha is essentially made of ‘marnes”, calcareous clays which contain high reserves of nurturing elements. Pinot Noir, Noble grape-variety, represents 80% of the vine stock.
A vineyard of hillsides which typical image is the one of wooded summits dominating curves of fields planted with vines and charming villages nestled at the heart of the valley.
These hillsides are mainly facing south, south-east, and east and thus benefit from optimal solar energy.
It is the oceanic influence that affects the continental climate of the Champagne region. As located in the northern hemisphere, the annual average temperature does not exceed 10°celcius and sunny hours are shorter than in the rest of the French vineyard. It is indeed this specificity which is at the origin of the Champagne peculiar quality: its finesse associated to a slow ageing of the grapes.
